Downtown Neighborhood Association Launches Light Up the Neighborhood Program in Partnership with Georgia Power
The Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) and Georgia Power, A Southern Company, have partnered to introduce a pilot public safety program called, Light Up the Neighborhood. The DNA determined that a high percentage of exterior light fixtures within the neighborhood are not illuminated during the evening hours, thus encouraging opportunistic crime. As part of its 2016 Public Safety Initiative, the DNA has partnered with Georgia Power to create a giveaway program of energy-efficient exterior light bulbs.
The bulbs will be distributed on Saturday, July 18 at the Farmers Market in Forsyth Park. This date has been selected as due it being close to the National Night Out Program (www.natw.org) on Tuesday, August 2nd. DNA has supported this program for many years, encouraging neighbors to turn on their porch lights and greet each other.
Through the generosity of Philips Lighting their retail partner, Home Depot on Victory Drive, the DNA and Georgia Power have secured Philips Energy Saver Compact Fluorescent 14-Watt light bulbs that are ideal for use in enclosed porch light fixtures. The bulbs have a soft white light, similar to incandescent light, and can replace existing 60-Watt post light bulbs. The shatter-resistant bulbs should last up to 7 years; they are shatter-resistant and Energy Star certified.
“As our community prepares for the National Night Out event in partnership with local law enforcement, it is our hope that we can light up our neighborhood to demonstrate the benefits of utilizing lighting as a crime deterrent” says Gale Steves, Vice President of the DNA.
Steves adds, “Georgia Power has agreed to support this pilot program and if successful, would like to introduce the program in other parts of Savannah.”
Downtown neighbors may pick up a complimentary bulb at the DNA Booth at the Forsyth Park Farmers Market on July 18 and 25 between 9 – 11 a.m. Bulbs will be distributed one per household on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.
The pilot program, Light Up the Neighborhood is presented by the Downtown Neighborhood Association and Georgia Power, A Southern Company with support from Philips Lighting and their retail partner, Home Depot on Victory Drive.
The Downtown Neighborhood Association is a membership organization guided by an elected Board of volunteer leaders with the goal to enhance the quality of residential life in the Historic Landmark District, protect Savannah’s unique downtown environment, and advocate public policies which support these objectives.
