President's Message - January 6, 2026

From the President:

I hope everyone has had a warm and restful series of holidays and that we are all headed into a New Year with the promise of a brighter future.

One issue that I wanted to mention is that if you are travelling around downtown, the Wright Square traffic situation changed today and will be affected for several months:

Temporary Lane Closure on York Street to Support Tomochichi Federal Building Improvements

SAVANNAH, Ga. —

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced a temporary closure and lane shift on York Street between Bull Street and Whitaker Street to support ongoing construction work at the Tomochichi Federal Building.

Beginning January 5, 2026, the north travel lane of York Street will be closed to complete gutter and drainage work adjacent to the courthouse. During this period, traffic will be shifted to the south side of the street, and on-street parking spaces along this block will be temporarily unavailable. The closure is expected to remain in place through March 13, 2026.

To reduce impacts during high-traffic periods, GSA will temporarily reopen the north lane during the following weekends:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend

  • Presidents’ Day weekend

  • Savannah Book Festival weekend

What to Expect During Construction

  • One-lane, eastbound traffic will be maintained through a temporary lane shift.

  • Approximately six metered parking spaces along York Street will be closed during construction.

  • Traffic patterns will be clearly marked with cones, barricades, and way-finding signage.

  • Pedestrian access to nearby businesses and buildings will remain open.

  • Work hours may include daytime, nighttime, and weekend activity as needed.

These measures are part of a coordinated effort to safely complete necessary infrastructure improvements while maintaining access to the surrounding downtown area.

On another note, please be reminded that our next general membership meeting will be on Tuesday, January 20th.

Our very timely speaker will be Ron Feldner our Savannah Chief of Water Resources. Ron will be providing an update on Savannah’s stormwater situation and the proposed stormwater fee presently set to come before City Council very soon.

As always, if you are planning to attend, please make sure to renew your membership and also to RSVP below.

Have a great week everyone and we will see you around in the squares,

Paul Cobet

President
